When my oldest daughter was about 11 years old, she asked me to buy her a book called Holes by Louis Sachar. We had a big family and were really tight on money but I scraped together the $12 and got her the book. The story was about a teenage boy who was accused of stealing a pair of famous shoes that were given to a homeless shelter to be auctioned off to make some money for them. He is sent to a boys camp where they dig holes to build their character. There are two stories here, the mystery of why he’s there and why they dig holes and a love story in the long ago west. When I read this book I loved it. A few years later  around 2003 they made it into a movie. I was hesitant to go because a lot of times the movies don’t do the book justice, but I went and the characters were just like I had pictured them in my mind. It’s a really good movie. I found out that Louis Sachar also wrote the movie script. I was happy that the movie stayed true to the book. I highly recommend the book and the movie.

Last week I just finished listening to another book on tape by the same author called The Card Turner. Its all about relationships too. I really enjoyed it. If you like books about relationships this is the book for you.The Cardturner Small

51exkcpv3zl-_sl75_1I went with my husband to see, The Giver. My children have read this book in their English classes over the years, but I’ve never read it. Now that I’ve seen the movie I think I’ll have to read the book. Its about government taking your memory’s and choices away so everyone will be  safe and the same. They make all your decisions for you so there is no war, no hate, but there is also no love. It was a very interesting movie thinking about the concept of sameness and no love in the world. Having our freedom to make choices makes us who we are. Good or bad.

I’ve always liked stories about the great Magician Merlin.  Have you ever wondered how he grew up and what he did as a child and a young adult?  T.A. Barron has written a great series about that very thing called the Lost years of Merlin. I’ve read them and really enjoyed his writings. It’s a fun read.lost_years_of_merlin

Christmas Eve day my family and I went to see the second part of the hobbit. I’ve read the Hobbit many times They have developed some things in the movies that were only hinted at in the book. I liked that. A few things were changed but it didn’t ruin the movie for me like it does in some movies. Over all they stayed pretty true to the book.

I took my girls to see Enders Game.  What can I say but WOW. It was visualy amazing and Harrison Ford was really great.   I was introduced to the book Enders Game about ten years ago and have read it a few times since then. It asks some deep philosophical questions. I’ve read most of the other books that go along with this book as well. They’re the same way. They make you think about what you really believe, and is it right. I’m reading Shadow Puppets right now. Its about Bean and Petra after the war was over and they go back to earth. They never do let Ender go back. I felt like they could have developed the characters in the movie a little more, but over all I thought it was pretty good. I admit I cried at the end. I think because I’ve read the book and knew the ending. It was so shocking to see a planet destroyed like that.

Go see the movie and if you want more, read the books.
